About Me

On this page, let me introduce myself... how photography became such an important part of my life, the experiences I’ve gathered over the years, and how I became a teacher of photography.

My Story

Strictly speaking my photography began in 1969... but actually, the seeds were probably sown three years earlier when my mother bought me a Kodak Brownie 127 for passing my 11 PLUS exam.

I will be forever in her debt for that thoughtful gift - which not only changed my life, but has indirectly affected the lives of all the hundreds of photographers I have taught.

The Early Years

My journey with photography officially began at the age of 14, when in 1969 when I bought my first 35mm film camera and joined the photography club at school in Brighton. It was there that I first discovered the magic of the darkroom. Learning to process film and make my own prints was a revelation, and before long photography had become a central part of my life.

As a young photographer I spent many hours wandering the streets and seafront of Brighton with a camera in hand, quietly documenting everyday life. Around the same time I developed a fascination with filmmaking, shooting my first short film on a 16mm Bolex camera and entering it into a regional competition, where it placed fifth among hundreds of entries (not bad for what was genuinely... the very first film I ever made).

Soon afterwards I moved to London and spent several years working at the BBC, gaining valuable experience in a professional creative environment.

Although my career later took me in many different directions, photography never left me. I continued studying the craft, shooting assignments and contributing images to local publications, gradually building experience and confidence behind the camera.

A Lifetime Behind the Camera

In 2005 I embraced digital photography and went on to work on a number of short films as Director of Photography, including one, for which I received a Hollywood nomination in 2009. I also produced commercial video work for organisations including the Metropolitan Police, the Royal Academy of Dance and most of the UK's national youth organisations.

Over the years I have photographed a wide range of subjects - from corporate headshots and travel brochures... to product photography, family portraits and weddings. In more recent years I developed a particular specialism in photographing children, creating imaginative concept images.

My work has taken me to many parts of the world, including the United States, France, Turkey, Portugal and the Greek islands of Cyprus, Crete and Samos.

Since 2009 I have also been teaching photography, sharing the knowledge and experience gathered from a lifetime behind the camera.

In 2016 I founded the Hampshire School of Photography - to formalise the direction I now saw myself heading.  Just as Covid struck I moved into bespoke premises at the prestigious Stockton House in Fleet, where we had our own training suite and studio (below).

In this image, we just can see the studio being used by a student as part of a four day workshop called"The Face".  It was four students, shooting four different models, over four days. We had a range of models from the very young through to the more mature. It was a chance to speak with them and get to understand working with models from their perspective and to fine-tune studio skills with lighting and posing.

Where I Am Now

After many years of running major workshops and year-long photography courses, I have recently begun moving into semi-retirement.

For a long time I never imagined I would slow down, simply because I love both photography and teaching so much. But life moves on, and I have decided that this is the right time to step back from the larger commitments and focus on a smaller number of individual students, while also allowing me to spend more time with my wife Linda, who is enjoying retirement as much as I am.

Since January 2026 I now work just three days a week,

This new website marks that change of direction. Rather than running large programmes, I now mainly offer one-to-one tuition*. Most of this takes place at my home in Fleet, where I have a small office in the garden set up for teaching. Occasionally, depending on what someone wants to learn, we may head out on location or even work at the student’s own home or workplace.

My focus now is simple: to share the knowledge gathered over a lifetime behind the camera with people who are passionate about photography.

If I can help the next generation of photographers avoid some of the mistakes I made and progress more quickly than I did, then I will consider that time well spent.

*While I plan to devote most of my time to teaching one-to-one, I expect there will still be the odd occasion throughout the year where a smaller workshop might be called for.  Teaching groups is fun and I would hate to completely abandon them.

I still like to shoot the odd roll of film - it's a very different experience to shooting digital, very calming, you have to slow right down.

Working as a Professional

Kevin with Canon Camera April 2013.jpg

Over the years my work as a professional photographer took me into all sorts of fascinating places.

Some days I would be filming recruitment videos for my largest client, the London Metropolitan Police. On other occasions I might be photographing live on stage with rock band Saxon.  As a complete contrast I have captured young players in action for national sports organisations such as SCL... and I have even taking to the skies with the Royal Air Force Air Cadets to film from aircraft to aircraft.

My work has taken me overseas on a number of occasions - both as a photographer... and also as a teacher (running photography workshops on the Greek islands of Crete and Samos).

It was an incredibly varied chapter of my career, working with organisations both large and small, some of whom you’ll see represented below.
