The Face is a one day workshop at the Hampshire School of Photography training centre in Fleet, Hampshire.
Led by professional photographer Kevin Ahronson, students will spend the day learning about the art of photographing the face.
Starting in the studio, you will spend the morning learning about studio lighting and photographing a female model.
After lunch you will move into the training room with your computer where Kevin will show you the Photoshop techniques that professionals use in face retouching.
By the end of the day you will have walked through the entire process from camera to edit and have gained a fresh insight into professional workflow and practices.

In the studio you will be working with mainly Bowens studio lighting (there are some Elinchrom flashes too) together with Lastolite, Westcott, Interfit and Manfrotto modifyers & stands.
The strobes can be fired by wire or by radio using Pocketwizard transmitters. We have adaptors that fit most cameras Because this workshop is limited to just four participants, everyone will get lot of time with their cameras, photographing the model(s) and easy access to Kevin for instruction and question answering.
Teas & coffees (and awesome biscuits) will be available upon arrival and at other points during the day.
We will break half-way through, please bring a packed lunch with you.
It is common practice these days to take the images you’ve shot in the studio and apply a range of editing techniques to further improve their appearance.
‘Retouching’ can be simple or it can be extensive, depending on your preferences and what you’re trying to achieve.
This workshop will show you how to efficiently edit and improve a number of elements of the human face. Once learnt, the principles can be applied to other parts of the body - and can even be used in other types of photography.
You’ll learn how to best work on the eyes, the mouth & teeth, hair, skin and what to do when the usual solutions don’t work. As part of the process you will learn advanced techniques using layers and layer masks.
Kevin has been behind a camera since 1969, over 50 years as a photographer.
He’s been using Photoshop since 2008 and reckons to have amassed over 12,000 hours of Photoshop over that time.
Your will be learning from someone who really knows how to get the best out of the software, developing tricks and shortcuts to help you speed up your editing.
The course will take place at the HSP Training Centre

Please bring your camera with you plus lens(s) suitable for shooting portraits.
Cameras
For a full-frame camera we suggest something around 85mm for most shots. For tight headshots, a 135mm is excellent.
If you have a crop sensor camera with a 1.5 crop, something 50-90mm should be fine. Micro four-third users should bring lenses around the 42-67mm range
Editing
All participants should bring their computer with them, which must have Adobe Photoshop already installed and functioning. You must also ensure that your computer is powerful enough to run Photoshop effectively*.
The latest version of Photoshop will be used throughout the workshop. If you have an old version on your computer, some of the the techniques demonstrated may not work.
If you have a graphics tablet, we advise you bring that too - as it will give you better control.
If your system is not working properly or the installation is incomplete, we won’t be able to assist you during the workshop. There is a busy schedule which cannot be delayed to help you out should you arrive unprepared (it wouldn’t be fair on everyone else on the course).
